ABSTRACT

The stereomicroscope can assist in measuring items of trace evidence if it is equipped with an eyepiece that includes a reticle that has a measurement scale. The scale must be calibrated so that the user knows the projected dimension of each division of the eyepiece scale at each magnification to be used for measurements. In this exercise, the student will calibrate the eyepiece scale with a standard, use the scale to perform a number of measurements, and observe the surface characteristics of some common items.
