ABSTRACT
The State of Affairs of SE Characterizing Traditional SE Over the past half-century, SE has developed as a discipline in certain classical areas, most notably aerospace and defense. It has also been applied in transportation and construction; energy; management, and manufacturing; and medical, environmental, and information systems. It was developed to promote a holistic or systemic approach to systems, as opposed to focusing on each separate part and addressing integration, if needed, as an afterthought. e SE that has been in play during this period, TSE, or good old traditional SE (GOTSE), has achieved considerable success in many cases but has also experienced more than a few significant failures.
