ABSTRACT

Whether a given material shows magnetism is delicately controlled by its structural and geometrical properties, such as the interatomic distances, coordination number (i.e., the number of nearest neighbors), and symmetry. e main consequences of the structural modi cations in nanostructured materials are the following (a er Feng et al. 1989):

1. Coordination number decreases, and hence there is a decrease in the overlap of the nearby atomic orbitals. is leads to the sharper density of states. e magnetic moment per atom increases with the decrease of coordination number.
