ABSTRACT

Tribology (etymologically from the Greek “tribein,” which means to rub, and “logos” a study) is the science of friction, wear, and lubrication. It is not a well-known science but it a ects many areas of our daily life. e simple act of walking is governed by the friction of soles of shoes on the ground. Sports like skiing, skating, etc., are based on tribological phenomena. e brake of a car is provided by a friction between the two sides of the system (disk mounted on the wheel and brake pads), which must be raised to ensure e ective braking, but if possible with low wear to save the pads.
