ABSTRACT
Cantilevers were initially developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM), where they were demonstrated to be sensitive enough to allow imaging of surfaces with an atomic resolution. When cantilevers are used as probes for AFM, they need an integrated tip at the free end. is sharp tip allows detecting changes in the topography while scanning the surface with sub-nanometer scale sensitivity in the vertical direction and with high lateral resolution.
