ABSTRACT

The previous chapter described highly diverse and sometimes extreme forms of police misconduct. However, the range of misconduct types is not infinite. Police duties have evolved into a common form all around the world, and with this comes a common set of pressures and opportunities for misconduct. These factors can be analyzed, and the misconduct problem categorized and understood. There is now a large body of knowledge about the nature and causes of police misconduct, which this chapter summarizes. Most importantly, there is also a very sound knowledge base about what is needed to eliminate, or at least minimize, police misconduct. As in medicine, effective treatment relies on accurate diagnosis.
