This chapter is organized as follows. First, we give an introduction to network and service management and a brief overview of the prominent network and service management architectures and research trends in the past. The evolution of the

networks and services from a management point of view is presented. We then present three current ongoing network and service management frameworks, namely the Next Generation Networks (NGN) initiative, the Next Generation Operation Support Systems (NGOSS) framework, and the Information Technology Information Library (ITIL) initiative. The NGN and NGOSS originate from the telecommunication management sector and the ITIL originates from the Internet management sector. The Web service management and service oriented architecture are discussed. Next, we introduce the concept of self-management and some of the challenges it poses. The conclusion summarizes the main points discussed. Due to the variety and longe vity of networks and the extensive research on service management, this chapter can only provide a glimpse of the area by highlighting the most relevant topics to the subject. For additional information, the readers may fi nd the historical perspective on network management [1] useful as well our previous writings on telecommunication network management [2] and self-managing networks and systems [3].
