ABSTRACT

Polymers originating from renewable resources are attracting more interest in a society where a large part of the garbage and waste consists of polymers derived from petroleum sources (Robertson, 2008). The most widely used renewable packaging materials are paper and board, which are based on cellulose, the most abundant renewable polymer worldwide. However, alternative biopolymers have been identi ed for the production of food packaging materials and research is taking place in order to develop materials that meet the requirements of the foods in order to obtain the desired shelf life and maintain quality.
