ABSTRACT

The four macromolecules that have been called the “building blocks of life” are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Tso (3873) estimated that as much as 75% of all the carbon from CO2 that is reduced by plants enters into some form of carbohydrate for at least a brief period of time. Via numerous metabolic pathways these carbohydrates are converted into hundreds of functional molecules necessary to sustain life.
