ABSTRACT

New Domains, New Insights Part II explores from an architectural point of view ve domains beyond those of aerospace and electronics, the sources of most examples and writings to date. The chapters can be read for several purposes. For a reader familiar with a domain, there are broadly applicable heuristics for more effective architecting of its products. For ones unfamiliar with it, there are insights to be gained from understanding problems differing in the degree but not in kind from one’s own. To coin a metaphor, if the domains can be seen as planets, then this part of the book corresponds to comparative planetology, the exploration of other worlds to benet one’s own. The chapters can be read for still another purpose, as a template for exploring other, equally instructive, domains. An exercise for that purpose can be found at the end of Chapter 7, “Collaborative Systems.”
