ABSTRACT
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of collagen, laminin, bronectin, entactin, proteoglycans, as examples, and provides the ideal and optimum environment to support both cellular growth and proliferation necessary for effective wound healing. The degradation, proliferation, and remodeling of the ECM must be carefully controlled by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).
