I. first. became. exposed. to. historic. bridges. as. an. undergraduate. in. civil. engineering.at.the.University.of.Illinois..In.Civil.Engineering.Hall.every.available.wall. surface.in.the.stairwells,.hallways.and.drafting.rooms.was.covered.with.large.blackand-white.photographs.of.civil.engineering.works.from.all.over.the.United.States,.a. good.number.of.them.historic.bridges..Going.to.class,.on.breaks.between.classes.and. even.during.some.dull.drafting.sessions,.we.students.scanned.the.pictures,.admired. the.works. they. represented,. and. tried. to.figure.out.how. they.worked,.what.made. them.stand.up..My.classmates.and.I.felt.that.these.photographs.contributed.significantly.to.our.evolution.into.civil.engineers.
