ABSTRACT

Cultured cells have often been used for the study of oxidative stress and its inhibition in order to bridge the gap between in vitro and in vivo systems. The protective effects of various antioxidants against cytotoxicity induced by different types of oxidative insult have been studied extensively. In general, the test antioxidant is added into the cell culture medium to mimic the physiological conditions. The efcacy of antioxidant depends on the uptake and localization in the culture medium as well as its inherent activity. Therefore, the uptake and distribution of antioxidants into the cells are important determining factor for antioxidant effects. In this chapter, these issues for tocotrienols (T3) are reviewed and discussed in comparison with tocopherols (T).
