ABSTRACT

To begin, your map design and layout design will vary depending on the type of output media that you plan to use. Slides, reports, posters, and Web sites all require slightly different approaches. These differences are discussed in the ensuing sections along with specialized tips for each particular medium. I will not touch on all the differences, nor do I aim to be completely comprehensive with the design tips, especially in the Web section, since that deserves to be a book in itself. Rather, I hope to present enough information to get you started and to pique your interest for further learning and experimentation with regard to customizing your output for maximum effect. Following the media sections is a short primer on a couple of export considerations: the dots-per-inch ratio (dpi) and exporting to graphic illustration software.
