ABSTRACT

The last chapter of the book is focused on a very important topic, namely the determination of the sample size for studies of agreement between several raters. Of course, sample size determination is only one part of the design of a study, but is probably the most important and is essential to achieve the objectives of the study. If insuffi cient information is employed, the conclusions to the study will be compromised, but on the other hand, if the sample size is too large, valuable resources will be wasted. For clinical studies, ethical issues play an important role in sample size choice. Also, in the case of clinical studies, when several readers are involved, the sample size is even more of a challenge because it not only involves determining the number of subjects, but also the number of raters necessary to achieve a given level of rater agreement.
