ABSTRACT

Can you really measure and benchmark leadership? You can benchmark coaching by looking at the win-loss column, by looking at the number of players from a high school program who move on to college teams, or by looking at the number of college players who move on to professional teams. And you can even benchmark coaching by looking at the number of assistant coaches who move on to become head coaches. These measures show the success of the coach in training athletes or training and preparing coaches for promotion. In the U.S. Army, you could benchmark the leaders by the number of junior officers who rose through the ranks or the number of junior officers who stayed in the Army past their initial commitments. Another measure of senior leaders was how many company commanders were later selected for battalion command and how many of a brigade commander’s subordinate battalion commanders were selected for future brigade commands.
