ABSTRACT
Often, continuum mechanics is taken to gain a foundation for solid mechanics like elasticity discussed in the last chapter. However, the foundation of continuum mechanics allows for the study of fluids. A fundamental characteristic of any fluid – be it a liquid or a gas – is that the action of shear stresses, no matter how small they may be, will cause the fluid to deform continuously as long as the stresses act.
