ABSTRACT

Initially, computers were connected with electronic technology through increased speed of computation. As for the underlying principles of computation, they are based on those of quantities. More specifically, computers’ capabilities of transfer and handling numerals come from an application of the concept of yin and yang “- -, —” of the Book of Changes (Wilhalm and Baynes, 1967). Since quantitative operations are only one of the functions of “- -, —,” or in other words, the capabilities of computers are far beyond quantitative computations, even in terms of quantitative capabilities, computers should be seen as information handlers or an “electronic brain,” as known in Chinese, which seem to be more appropriate considering what computers can do.
