ABSTRACT
The energy balance (which is a generalization of the 1st law of thermodynamics) is needed in order to calculate temperature, heat transfer or work. In this chapter, we derive the energy balance for open flow systems, and show that the enthalpy H provides a practical way of combining a stream’s internal energy U and flow work.
