Microemulsions are microheterogeneous, thermodynamically stable mixtures of oil and water. Here, the term “oil” means any water insoluble organic liquid. Macroscopically, they are homogeneous systems. Such oil/water disperse systems were known for a long time as there were some commercial fl oor cleaning products available in the American market at the turn of the twentieth century.
