ABSTRACT
Workplace policing in itself is not so surprising until it is recalled that it can be conducted in the most dicult areas of all to police. No public spaces are so crowded, chaotic, and prone to crime as the markets and taxi parks. Large numbers are crammed into small spaces, with goods open to unprotected display. Yet, it is precisely in these crime hot spots that people have organized eective policing with a minimum of resources and where they do their best to keep the police out. Put another way, workplace policing is not an example of the professional police leaving it to the willing amateurs to oversee relatively quiet, crime-free environments. is is policing precisely where one might think the professionals are needed most; yet, in fact it turns out to be where they are absent and not required. How is it that ordinary people are able to organize their own eective policing in such dif-cult environments? is chapter looks at the work of some that function in post-conict Africa.
