ABSTRACT
For all the rapid migration to the cities, Africa’s population, according to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), will not cease on current projections to be predominantly rural until 2030. e World Bank estimates that the percentage of the population living in poverty in sub-Saharan Africa was 50 percent in 2005. In absolute terms the number was nearly 390 million by 2005.1 Most of those who are poorest live in the rural areas of Africa. In 2000, it was estimated that a third of those living on less than US$1 a day live in Africa, the majority in the rural areas.
