ABSTRACT

The concept of Presence became part of our everyday communication pattern with the rise in popularity of the various instant messaging (IM) communities due to the proliferation of the Internet and personal computers. Being able to set one’s presence status to let your “buddies” know that you are available to chat is seen as a powerful communication tool. It was with this paradigm in mind that the designers within Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP™) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) set out to extend the concept of presence from just a pure IM feature to a general-purpose feature that can be used across multiple devices as well as across multiple applications.
