ABSTRACT

Convergence is one of those terms that has many definitions to many different people, usually based on their particular perspective. To an engineer, it may mean the bringing together of different types of networks. To the salesman, it may mean bringing existing applications to new market segments. To the marketing organization, it may mean an opportunity to create an entirely new market segment. To the independent application developer, it may mean bringing the Web world to the wireless world. Many definitions exist, and they are all probably correct from a particular perspective. Here is one way that we inside of AT&T™ like to view convergence:

An integration of traditional or new data/multi-media communications services in ways that add significant value for the end-user by making the communications easier or more transparent to use.
