ABSTRACT

An increased demand for fish by health-conscious consumers in recent years has created a need that can no longer be met by existing wild fish stocks. Commercial aquaculture production of a variety of species has sub sequently increased to meet this growing demand (Stickney 1994). Total U.S. aquacultural production was valued at over $760 million in 1990 and continues to increase, primarily through intensifying culture practices. As a result, production losses due to disease also have increased and indicate the need for precisely formulated, economical diets that adequately meet the needs of fish grown in high-density production systems.
