ABSTRACT

Pomegranate is a popular dessert fruit in the tropics and subtropics. It is extensively cultivated in the Mediterranean region for the fruit’s juicy pulp. It is also grown in home gardens as an ornamental plant. The fruit is processed for juice, syrup, and jelly preparations. Seeds are used in prepara­ tion of several food dishes. It is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, phos­ phorus, and vitamins B and C. The bark from the plant is used for medicinal purposes, such as curing stomach ailments and diarrhea, and the seeds show antibacterial properties.
