ABSTRACT

Litchi is an evergreen, dense, dicotyledonous tree that grows up to 10 m in height. Leaves are glossy, green, and pinnate with two to nine leaflets. Flowers are small, green, or yellow, in terminal panicles, with male and fe­ male flowers. Fruits are globose or oblong, borne in loose clusters with long peduncles, and the rind is dark red or yellow, brittle, and covered with sharp tubercles. Seeds are dark brown and covered with a pearl-white, translucent, juicy aril (see Figure 12.1).
