ABSTRACT

Soursop is commonly cultivated for the edible fruits. Fruit is eaten fresh after peeling the exocarp. Flesh is used in preparation of juice. Soursop is native to South America and cultivated throughout the tropics. It is largely grown in Surinam, the United States, and Venezuela. Soursop is a small ev ergreen tree belonging to the family Annonaceae and has chromosome number 2n = 16. Flowers are yellow, protogynous, and strongly odorous. Fruit is dark green, ovoid, and covered with curved fleshy spines. Pulp is soft white, with a sweetish sour taste, and contains many black seeds. It is propagated by seeds and grows well in sandy loam soils. It is cross-polli nated by insects.
