ABSTRACT

Rambutan belongs to family Sapindaceae and has chromosome number 2n = 22. It grows well in hot, humid tropical conditions with high rainfall. Its cultivation is successful in its native area. It prefers well-drained soil. Trees are evergreen, monoecious or dioecious, and grow up to 20 m in height. Flowers are unisexual or perfect, small, greenish white, and ar ranged in panicles. Fruit is globose or ovoid with hairy prickles. Its flesh is juicy, white, sweet, or sourish. Seeds are globose and 2.5 to 3.5 cm in diam eter. Rambutan is propagated by seeds and by bud grafting. Seedling trees take longer to bear fruit, five to six years, and are not to true to type. Insects such as bees and flies pollinate the flowers. Fruits are nonclimatric and har vested when fully ripe. Seeds are removed from fruit, washed, and used im mediately for propagation or for short-term storage.
