ABSTRACT

Okra is commonly called gombo, gumbo, and lady’s finger. It is culti vated for its edible pods. The immature pods are boiled, fried, or cooked as a vegetable. Tender fruits are also canned or dehydrated. Plant extract is used for clarifying sugarcane juice in jaggary preparation. Sometimes fiber is ex tracted from the stem and used in the textile industry. Pods are rich in vita mins and minerals such as calcium and potassium. Seeds are rich in oil and contain about 2 0 percent edible oil.
