ABSTRACT

Healthcare professionals have good reason to be interested in quantitative relationships. Their professional activities and their careers can be affected by answers to questions about the interactions between variables that may be under their control. For example, does average patient revenue decline as length of stay increases? Does cardiac risk increase with a patient’s weight? Does a hospital administrator’s income rise with experience? Is the mortality rate for a given procedure in a hospital inversely proportional to the number of times it is performed there each year? Does overall health status of a city’s population decline as urban density increases? The decisions you make are likely to be affected by the results of studies that address questions such as these.
