ABSTRACT

In reversed phase chromatography, the dependence of solute retention on the organic modifier concentration (j) in the mobile phase is sanctioned by the following relationship [1]:

ln lnk k Swϕ ϕ= − (8.1)

where kw is the retention factor when j = 0% and S is a constant for a given solutesolvent combination and is related to the free energy of transferring the solute from the pure aqueous to the pure organic phase. It is clear from Equation 8.1 that the free energy of adsorption is a linear function of organic modifier concentration.
