ABSTRACT

What managers need to make the proper decisions (along with the common sense and nerve required) is information. Today, many managers feel they need much more information than they receive. On occasion this is true, but in most cases today, the problem is not too little information. So much information is available that managers are overwhelmed, although they usually say they have a lot of data to sort. The fact is that management information service (MIS) groups provide an overabundance of data. Piles of computer printouts on office desks are common sights. Companies also store an abundance of data on their main computer drives and servers. A successful manager knows what data to extract from the reams of data available in print or stored in computer memory.
