ABSTRACT
Equipment design The design of mining equipment plays a crucial part in the safety and ef- ciency of work tasks that are conducted by operators at that equipment. Similarly, design has a major impact upon the ease, safety, and efciency of equipment maintenance. This chapter focuses on equipment design, looking at key aspects such as the design process, the equipment life cycle, and human factors issues concerning safety and usability. Given that the target audience for this book includes equipment designers and manufacturers, mining site personnel, safety professionals, as well as students, researchers, and others, the information contained here needs to be reasonably general. At the same time, it sets the scene for Chapters 4-11, which deal with more specic human factors issues related to mining equipment.
