ABSTRACT

In a mixture consisting of two components (e.g., methanol and water) an additional parameter related to the component concentration, for example, the mole fraction, is required to describe the state of the system. Methanol is highly volatile and has a higher Psat as compared to water at the same temperature. Œerefore, a mixture may have different compositions in the corresponding liquid and vapor phases. Hence, to describe the liquid or vapor mixture you need to specify T, P, and Xk. Œe phase change phenomenon is schematically illustrated in Figure 9.1.
