1.1 C linical Settings

The female reproductive system includes organs and organ systems that serve a number of functions related to the creation and maturation of a new organism. Each of the components of the system (Table 1) may be subject to the toxic effects of xenobiotic agents. Note that among the clinical endpoints there is considerable overlap; in fact, these clinical endpoints are crude and nonspecific. Subfertility, for example, is an endpoint associated with abnormal function at any of a number of anatomic sites. In clinical reproductive medicine, the rela­ tionship between a patient complaint and a mechanism of dysfunction is often indirect.
