ABSTRACT

This Chapter reviews research efforts in the three main related domains that are micro-mechanical flying devices, bio-inspired vision-based navigation, and artificial evolution for vision-based robots. The first Section focuses on systems that are small and slow enough to be, at least potentially, capable of flying in confined environments such as houses or offices. We will see that most of them are not (yet) autonomous, either because they are too small to embed any computational power and sensors, or simply because there a light enough control system is not available. For this reason we have decided to take amore pragmatic approach to indoor flight by building upon a simpler technology that allows us to spend more efforts on control issues and miniaturisation of the embedded control-related electronics.
