ABSTRACT

This study was designed to give 26 American police chiefs the opportunity to answer some fundamental questions about police leadership. They graciously offered insights about their experiences, and shared the joy and pain that every police chief has experienced on a regular basis. Most important, they celebrated the many challenges of working in a democracy, partnering with communities, and mobilizing their officers’ support for their vision. It is hoped that this study has captured both the difficulties and successes of police chiefs throughout the United States.
