ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding Tolstoy’s comment, humans are not easy to change. However, after the reader has read this book, we hope that he or she will recognize that, of all the parts of the aviation system, the human is the part most often called upon to change. Fortunately, one of the most characteristic traits of humans is their adaptabilitytheir ability to change their behavior to fit the demands of the situation. There is no more dramatic demonstration of this adaptability than pushing forward on the controls when the aircraft has stalled and the nose is pointing downward-when all one’s instincts call for yanking the controls backward.
