ABSTRACT

Susman (1994) analyzed the implications of the functional morphology of the human thumb as contrasted with that of other higher anthropoids. He concluded that only in members of our genus is there reliable functional morphological evidence for the capability of using tools in a complex manner and that currently available evidence places the rst appearance of the morphology back to 2.5 million years. Quade et al. (2004) push toolmaking back to 2.5 to 2.6 my.
