ABSTRACT

Introduction Many important questions and concerns were raised by the members of the SIM Enterprise Architecture Working Group (SIMEAWG) at their first meeting in January 1997 as they began planning their research study into “the state of EA”. These included matters such as:

What is the current state of EA programs, activities, and capabilities? ◾ What EA-related research has been conducted already? ◾ How do IT professionals define enterprise architecture? ◾ What is the scope of EA activities? ◾ Who participates in EA-related activities? ◾

What are the purposes, benefits, and risks of doing EA? ◾ What are the primary enablers and inhibitors of EA programs? ◾ What are the foundational capabilities for successful EA programs? ◾ Is there a relationship among EA perceptions and capabilities and other orga-◾ nizational activities such as information system development, system analysis and design, IT governance, and IT project management?
