ABSTRACT
A crucial step in the comprehension of the ecosystem functioning is the estimate of the magnitude of prokaryotic biomass as a particulate carbon and nitrogen pool relative to other major particulate pools of these elements, which participate in nutrient cycling and sinking ux. Essential elements for these estimates are the estimate of prokaryotic cell size and the use of appropriate conversion factors for estimating prokaryotic biomass from cell volume (biovolume).
