ABSTRACT
Community is rooted in a sense of place through which the people are in a reciprocal relationship with their landscape. As such, a community is not simply a static place within a static landscape but rather is a lively, everchanging, interactive, interdependent system of relationships. Because a community is a self-organizing system, it not only incorporates information but also changes its environment. Thus, as the community in living alters the landscape, so the landscape in response alters the community.
