ABSTRACT

This chapter provides discussion on wind energy harvesting research and development. Wind energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies all over the world. Betz's law demonstrates the theoretical maximum power that can be extracted from the wind. The power curve is a diagram that shows the specific output power of a turbine at various wind speeds, which is important in turbine design. The power coefficient is the ratio of the electrical output power of the wind turbine to the total potential wind power, which depends on the wind speed. The power coefficient cp depends on the specific design of the wind turbine. The wind generator can be chosen based on the installed power, site of the turbine, load type, and simplicity of control. Brushless direct current BLDC generators, permanent magnet synchronous generators PMSG, induction generators, and synchronous generators are the machine types that are used in wind turbine application.
