ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the trend toward the increasing use of military-style weapons and tactical methods by civilian police departments. The shorthand way to describe this phenomenon is the “militarization” of the police. This phenomenon is defended by some, attacked by others, and ignored by most. I will attempt to take a “middle ground” on this issue. I do not see it with alarm. I see it as a pragmatic “solution” to some vexing issues facing the police. However, I do acknowledge the criticism. Is the prospect of heavily armed police officers on American streets problematic? My answer is, yes-but it is or will be necessary! In this light, I will address the data, the logic, and the implications of this trend.
