ABSTRACT

The commonly used old model of “command and control” project management does not work in today’s environment. In actuality, when used, that style of management tends to have the opposite of the intended effect on projects and team members. For example, a team with resources who are fractionalized and do not report directly to the project manager will not respond well to insensitively being told what to do and when to do it, and may even focus on other activities or projects before doing their work on that particular project. Without the proper influence, leadership, and motivation, team members will lose morale, focus on other work, produce lower-quality results, and possibly even leave the project.
