ABSTRACT

Due to a variety of factors, research on the health benefits of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) has recently gained momentum. Demographic changes such as the aging of the “Baby Boomer” generation, economic factors such as the rising cost of health care, and increased nutritional research in areas such as anti-oxidants are behind this momentum. As the link between nutrition and health becomes more clearly established within the Western medical establishment, and the cost savings of nutrition and prevention vs. pharmaceutical drugs and curing become better documented, the area of essential fatty acids in general, and GLA in particular, is attracting increasing attention.
