ABSTRACT

The work described here discusses the ability of heme proteins, especially myoglobin, to mediate free radical reactions, either initiating mechanisms or propagative events. In particular, the interactions between ferryl myoglobin and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) can amplify the oxidative modification of the LDL; in turn, the lipid hydroperoxides can attack the heme ring of the myoglobin, inducing iron release.
