ABSTRACT
Since we live at the bottom of an ocean of air (containing 21% oxygen), most biodegradation processes take place in the presence of oxygen (aerobic conditions). However, biodegradation can also proceed at a slower rate in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic conditions). Most, but not all, detergent ingredients that biodegrade under aerobic conditions also biodegrade under anaerobic conditions.
