ABSTRACT
Hydropower development and road and rail tunneling together with traditional underground mining have inspired, carried and proven the importance of the science of rock mechanics in our societies. Other presentations in this conference are dealing to comprehensive depth on the importance of in situ stress for a lot of applications. In this context, it is pointed out that development of the science must not rest, and why major concern must be addressed to the efficiency in acquisition of virgin stress of the rock mass.
